World Contraception Day is an event that takes place every year on September 26. The mission of World Contraception Day is to spread global awareness about available contraceptive methods and at the same time educate. The purpose of the event is to aid individuals and couples in making educated choices about birth control methods and family planning. The World Contraception Day Coalition states that their mission is that all individuals, regardless of gender, nationality, race or age will be able to make informed decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health.
Per the World Health Organization, multiple studies conducted across several countries over the past few years have shown that improved access to low-cost contraception, reproductive education and family planning programs has reduced high-risk pregnancies, maternal and child mortality, teen and unplanned pregnancies and abortions while at the same time improving overall child and maternal health and nutrition. A person’s ability to choose the timing, spacing and number of children is fundamental to the individual and family’s well-being.
